Is Okonkwo destined for tragedy or did his choices (made by his own free-will) lead him to his tragic end?

Please explain.

  1. Okonkwo was destined for tragedy, and also it was his decision. The reason is because from the beginning he try so hard not to be like his father. So he got obsess with the fact of not being a failure and not being like his father. At the end everything fall apart, all of his hard work trying not to be like his father, he end up in some way like his father. From just reading the title of the book you could see that this will be a tragic story, to be a tragic story there will have to a tragic character. Also that he was use to doing things in one way, and that was being in the farmer and be mean, but respect in his village. So when the Christian messenger came and try to change it, he was scared, because what he know from when he was little is now wrong. So he decided to kill himself.

  2. I am a bit confused with what you tried to say at the end Dalin, but for the rest I understand what you are trying to say that he was "obsessed," but I think he could of controlled that.
Okonkwo was not destined for tragedy; he made his choices by “his own free will.” The fact that he knew that there was a crack in his life and he chose to ignore that crack makes it his fault that he had this tragic ending. He could have changed this though, he could have became his own person and forget all else that happened in society and on a personal level. He, willingly, chose to ignore it. So I believe that he held the answer in his hand and he was not destined for tragedy.

  3. I think the choices the choices okonkwo made lead him to his end.He had so many opportunities to make his life better but then he always ended up doing something stupid. For example when one of his wives went to do her hair and he didnt know.Instead of just letting it go and leaving it in the past he decided to attack her.I also think that since Okonkwo was so focused on trying to not be like his father that it also was a factor in his demise.I agree with Monica he did have the power to change his life for the better but always ended up taking a wrong turn that had consequences that affected him and his family.

  4. OKonkwo was not destined for tragedy. I believe that he made his choices by his own free will. The fact that he wanted to be nothing like his father affected how he ended up. But he did not want to change the society and was not able to adapt, which is something that every community will need to go through in order to survive. In the end he didn't know what to do, he was afraid as he was never put in a situation such as this. For this reason he decided to commit suicide. He was scared of loosing his respect among the society.

What Dalin said is a bit confusing as you are trying to fight from both sides of the argument. This is why I agree with what monica believes in this situation.

  5. I think that Okonkwo's choices led him to to his tragic end. The book opened up telling the failures of Okonkwo's father, Onoka. Okonkwo's mindset was that he had to be better than his father. He worked hard his entire life. When the Christian Missionaries came in, and began trying to convert everyone Okonkwo was furious. He wasn't a man of change. He did what he was suppose to do, and that was that. All the pressure that Okonkwo built on himself is what wrecked him. Okonkwo killed himself at the end because he couldn't take the pain any longer. He wanted to revolt against the missionaries knowing that his son is one on them.

  6. I think that it was the choices that Okonkwo made after being determined to not be like his father that led to his tragic failures. He had pressure put on his shoulders and choose in his mind not to follow in his fathers footsteps. But he choice to kill Ikemafuna, beat his wife, and not ever learn from his past customs. His past customs which he never let go off but the missionary changed led to his downfall. He could not handle it and his choices made him commit sucide it wasnt fate...

  7. Free-will? Was Okonkwo truly free? i believe Okonkwo was trapped in the believes of his society and so felt pressure to fit into society. The choices he made to be a real man and make everyone forget about the reputation his father had leaded him to his tragic end.Okonkwo worked hard to have many titles. That was his main focus to be a successful man in his society, but his closure to his opinion and believes did not allow him to see beyond them. when the missionaries came and the clans were spliting apart he could not handle it.

  8. Okonkwo did have free will and his choices led up to his demise. He was so stuck on the past and did not think of the fact that nothing stays the same. His unwillingness to change and find his power another way led to him committing suicide. Change is horrifying and I guess to Okonkwo death was less intimidating.

  9. I think Okonkwo's actions were what led him to his tragic end. Nobody is destined for tragedy, every human is capable of making decisions that will either have a positive or negative affect in the long run of his/her life. I agree with Cristina, Okonkwo was so wrapped up in what society expected from him and he never thought for a moment whether it was right or wrong. I do not believe it is all his own fault. Although he had the free will to make his own decisions and stay strong-headed on his beliefs, he was only trying to maintain the society that he and all his past ancestors had known.

  10. At the beginning of the story, everyone knew that all Okonkwo wanted to do was to become successful and have a good title. He tried so hard to do this that he didn't notice he was leading himself to his own tragic end. I believe his own choices made him end up where he did at the end. He had too much pride in himself and so because of that, it0 made him take his own life away..

  11. I think that Okonkwo was destined for tragedy from the beginning. I think this because of how hard he pushed himself and his family to be successful. I think that he was too prideful to accept the fact the he no longer had a chance to be on top as he wished to be in the beginning of the book. Once everything changed when the white man came into the picture, Okonkwo tried hard to convince his tribe to fight to get things back to the way they were but it was a lost cause. As soon as Okonkwo realized this, he knew he was doomed to fall to the hands of the white man. In his eyes, his only out was to kill himself and that's exactly what he did.

  12. I think that okonkwo was destined for tragedy because of his fathers misfortune. this is also true for how hard he worked to be perfect and a big succes. His ego got in the way of seeing how his life was going downhill ever since he starting morning the death of Ikimafuna. His ego also led to his own death.

  13. The choices that Okonkwo made led him to his death. It all started because of the man Okonkwo was. He is strong and very strict when it comes to his beliefs and traditions. So when the Christian missionaries come to convert the people of Umuofia, he sees that as a threat to his culture. That is why whenever the Christians came to speak to the people about their God, he did not really pay any mind to them and walked away. When the people of Umuofia set up the meeting which was interrupted by the Christians, Okonkwo acted the way he did and killed one of them. His anger and bitterness got the best of him and he knew he was in trouble. Okonkwo killed himself because he knew the Christians were going to. That is where his pride comes in again. He rather be killed by his own hands than of those who changed his people.

  14. Okonkwo was not destined for a tragic end. The choices he made lead him to his demise. Okonkwo mindset was jus on not being like his father that is all he thought about. He didn’t think about his family or the clan. He just wanted to be on top and have the most titles and most wives. If he stood back and looked at all that he accomplished and just relaxed for a bit I think he would have been better. He wouldn’t have been dead. He made poor choices like letting his son go. He lost a apart of himself that he was never going to get back. Okonkwo could have had a great life but the choices he made with his own free will caused him to his tragic end.
