Period 1 Things Fall Apart Week of 5/13/2011

Is Okonkwo destined for tragedy or did his choices (made by his own free-will) lead him to his tragic end?

Please explain.

thanks,

Anyways... I believe that Okonkwo's choices led to his tragic ending. Okonkwo was so caught up in not being like his father that it backfired and made it become one of the causes for his tragic ending. Okonkwo wanted to be perfect in everything, but that didnt work out. He should of known that no one could be perfect and it is ok to mess up sometimes in life. I guess Okonkwo's weaknesses led to his downfall in which was a tragic ending.

  2. I don't really think that Okonkow was destined for tragedy. He started out life at an early age as the greatest warrior in all the land. He wasn't afraid to fight in war. He was the greatest wrestler. he, not his father, supported his family at an early age. He could have continued to be a great hero...but his choices led him to his tragic end. because he was so afraid of being weak like his father, he could never show any emotion. He thought that revealing emotions was acting feminine. So, he was angry, violent and arrogant and all his choices were based on his anger. He chose to kill Ikemefuma. He killed the messenger to the courts in hopes that the tribe will stand behind him in a war. In anger, he chose to take his own life.

  3. I think Okonkuo was destined to fall because his pride was what blinded him. He kind of mixed honor and pride. He was not much of a hero because he never did anything heroic so i dont ee him as much of a hero.

  4. All okonkwo wanted to do was be succesful and have a good name. He tried so hard in doing this that he didnt notice he was leading himself to his tragic end . I believe his own choices made him end up where he did. He had too much pride in himself and that made him take his own life. I agree with what Darbely said about him not willing to show his emotions. Talking about your emotions isn't a feminine thing it's something everyone should do. So in my opinion he wasn't destined for tragedy he just tried too hard to be everything Unoka wasn't .

  5. I believe Okonkwo choices lead him to his tragic end because he wanted to be better than his dad and he wasnt gonna let anyone stop him. He had so much pride that it lead him to his faith which his decides led him to it. I also agree with Darbely because he didnt show too much emotion which if he chose a different route, maybe he didnt have to kill himself at the end of the novel.

  6. I think that Okonkwo's actions lead him to his trajic end. Okonkwo had a strong personality and the choices that he was making in his past was what lead everything to happen the way it did. I agree with what Ely said about him being to prideful. I think that if Okonkwo woulnd't be so caught up in being filled with pride and wanting to be on top, the ending would've been different. i think he wouldv'e had more respect if he changed his personality and wasn't so harsh with everyone/everything.

  7. I believe that Okonkwo decisions lead him to killing himself. I felt that throughout the story Okonkwo tried so hard to be much more successful then his father that at the end he failed. I agree with Anndy. He had too much pride and it lead him to his faith which he killed himself. I felt that throughout the story he would of never killed himself if he never went to exile or if he never tried so hard. If he tried to respect everyone when he came back things would of been different.

  8. I do think Okonkwo decisions lead him to his tragic end. I think this because Okonkwo tried to be someone he wasnt by trying to be different from his dad. By trying to be different he was held by his free-will and his choices lead him to get at where he was at. i dont feel bad for what happend with Okonkwo eiether because i feel like he could of stopped it and acted differently.

  9. I do believe his free will lead him to his own death. Going back to chapter 1, Okonkwo knows he has to be better than his father ever was. He would do whatever he could to fight for what he believed in. I disagree with everything that Anndy said.

  10. I don't believe that Okonkwo was meant to have such a tragic end. His actions did play a part, but i'm not so sure about that either. Okonkwo was just very straight minded and once he had his head set on something, nothing was going to change his mind. i think it was his narrow-minded way of thought that led him to his doom. If he would have just accepted that society has changed to a point that even after he stood up for what he believed, nothing was going to change, & just gone on his own with his family, he would have been okay.

  11. i think it lead to his death. his actions played a vital role in his downfall. He did not like anyone telling him otherwise and he like to do things his way. Him not trying to be like his father affected his actions very much so. He was filled with pride and honor and how he wanted to have a good name for himself.
