1) How does Unoka's life affect Okonkwo as a child as well as a man?
2) What does Okonkwo value?
3) Based on what you have read so far, what might happen to Okonkwo as the novel progresses?
Thanks and remember to respond to someone else's response!
Mrs. Breen
Well Mrs. Breen
ReplyDelete1) Unoka affects Okonkwo as a child as well as a grown man because he is not a successful man, always in debt, the fact hat his father has no title or that even worse that he is called Agbala which means women obsessed him with the pursuit to be known as a strong man.
2) Oknkwo values everything his father does not value.
3) Based on what I've read so far, what might happen to Okonkwo is that his fear to be like his father will bring his destruction.
1) Unoka's life affect Okonkwo as a child as well as a man because okonkwo wanted to be something unlike his father, a man that was always in debt, he wanted to be better and known for something good. so when he was a child he defeated the "cat" and was known for that. finaly wanting people to know that he was not like his father. so he continued this throughout his life. by deafeating the "cat" he showed that unlike his father he was not fearful of anything.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values his name becuase the fact that he doesnt want to be known as the child whose father was always in debt opposed to the warrior who beat the undefeated "cat" says that he cares about this more than anything.
3)Okonkwo might understand why his father did what he did and not judge him as much as he has.
1.) How Unoka's life affects Okonkwo as a child was that he never enjoyed his child hood like others and was raised with a father who always stayed in debt meaning he was going to grow up in that same circle and inherit his bad habits. SO he wanted to prove everything wrong for exmple when he defeated the cat on his own showing he is different. It affected his morals and reasonignt o do what he does as he continues to grow.
ReplyDelete2.) What he values is the way he is looked upon to other people, he does not want to have a bad name (something his father had)... so he values the respect of others to hold himself high in society and not be known as a person who is just like his father and is not responsible.
3.) What might happen to Okonkwo as the novel progresses is that he will have to face consqeuences due to the decisions his father made when he was a child and put the family in debt. But I think realizing and seeing the affects of what his father did will help him build on his character for his own future and make him a different man.
I AGREE Moniker! with your number three, i didnt really think of that... but it can be true, maybe he'll realize that what he did was for him and his family! :)
ReplyDeleteWE blogged at the SAME TIME Nalba !!!I totally agree with what you have said nelly becuase he did value his name more than anything. It was important for him to not be like his father.
ReplyDeleteAnd cristina I agree with what you have said that he values what his father did not ecuase his father did not care aout what others thought of him and Okonkawo did. OPPOSITES !
1. i agree with cristina Unoka affects Okonkwo because his father is unsucessful and in major debt and as a man Okonkwo is wealthy and sucessful unlike his father.
ReplyDelete2.i agree with cristina again and i also think oknkwo values being wealthy and powerful.
3.based on what i have read so far i think that Okonkwo will try to not be like his father but slowly end up being like his father.
1) Unoka's actions affects Okonkwo as a child as well as a grown man because he was not a successful man when he was alive. He borrow money from too many people and is in debt. Since his father was never successful it make him not want to be like his father.
ReplyDelete2) Oknkwo values everything his father does not value. Also the fact that he is the best wrestler in the nine valley.
3) Based on what I've read so far, what might happen to Okonkwo is that with his attitude or not wanting to be like his father, will eventually make him become more like his father. Or end up like his father.
In response to everyone :D
I think we all belief, that he will end up being like his father, because he try to hard to be not like his father.
1. Unoka's life does affect okonkwo's childhood and when he grows up. Since Unoka was lazy Okonkwo had to provide for his mother and two sister. This caused Okonkwo to not have much of a child =hood and was force to grow up. Okonkwo is do determined to not be like his father that he becomes a man of power and with great riches.
ReplyDelete2. Okonkwo values hard work and his name.
3.I feel that as the novel progresses Okonkwo is going to get himself in trouble. His anger is becoming a big problem. Take for example when he beat his youngest wife during the week of peace. I believe it might just keep getting worse.
I agree with a lot of what Monica said about Okonkwo wanting to be nothing like his father. I disagree that Okonkwo will learn and understand his father. Okonkwo has so much anger towards his father that at this point in his life he might not want to understand why his father did the things he did.

ReplyDelete1) Unoka's life affects Okonkwo as a child and man becuase Oknokwo had to grow up too fast because of Unoka. So he never had that childhood and this I think made built him to become a stronger person, and maybe thats why he does'nt want to turn out like his Father.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values everything his father does not.
3) Based on what I've picked up from the reading so far, what might happen to Okonkwo is that his fear, or anger you can say, of becoming like his Father might get to him, and that would be the end of him.
...
BTW, I totally Disagree with you Dalin on #3 -_- I don't think he will turn out to be like his Father. He is just too opposite of who his Father is!
1) Unoka's life affected Okonkwo as a child and as a man because the fact that Okonkwo saw what a failure his father was made him want to work that much harder to be a successful person himself. Okonkwo wanted to make something of himself and whatever it took to be a man that was nothing like his lazy father.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values hard work and reputation. He does what he needs to in order to earn his respect as a man. He believes that laziness will get you no where and bring you nothing.
3) I think that as the novel goes on Okonkwo will become power hungry. I think that he will become too concerned with being the best of the clan and trying to make his family work as hard as he does. I feel that his striving for success will cause his downfall.
* I agree with what Angie said. I do think that Okonkwo's temper might get the best of him later on in the novel and will backfire on him.
1. Unoka's life affected Okonkwo as a child and a man because as he grew up, he saw that his father wasn't worth much and that he was a failure. Seeing this in his father, made Okonkwo want to work very hard to be success full. he didn't want to be anything like is father but something so much better.
ReplyDelete2.Okonkwo values hard work and being prosperous.
3. I think that as the novel progresses that Okonkwo will end up losing all his belonging and his money because he will let it get to his head.
* I definitely agree with Gabriela when she says that he will power hungry because he didn't have this as a child and when people begin to gain to much they lose control.
1) Unoka's life affects Okonkwo as a child and a man because he sees all the mistakes his father makes. Always being in debt, always borrowing money, and lives a poor life. Because of this he wants to make something of himself and be someone that others admire.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values hard work and respect. He believes that laziness is not an option in live.
3) I think that Okonkwo is going to go further in life than his father. Everytime he thinks back to his father or remembers what he went through as a child will help him push himself even more.
*I disagree with both Ashley and Gabriela because I don't think because he wants to be the best it will lead to him being like his father. I believe that when you put your mind on something and you strive for it you will go very far in life.
1. Unoka's life affects Okonkwo life not only as a child but a man also because by seeing his father in debt and the trouble he went through, Okonkwo does not want that to happen to him. He wants to be nothing like his father. Okonkwo saw his father as being weak, and he refuses to be weak. Tvhat is why he works so much and also put his family to work.
ReplyDelete2. Okonkwo values how much work man does to be on top. He is all about strong work and never giving up for anything. He will not accept any laziness especially when it comes to his own son. He believes that they more work you do, the more others will see you as a leader.
3. Based on what I've read, Okonkwo will end up being just like his father. He will break down his strong personality. He will try his hardest to stray away from the path his father was in, but in the end they will be the same.
I agree with Cristina on question 3. If Okonkwo spends so much time disliking the person his father was then that will cause his destruction in the end. He will later realize that the person his father was, is the man he will be.
1)Unoka's life affects Okonkwo's life as a child and as well as a man because his failures and bad reputation give Okonkwo being that he is his son a bad name. As a man Okonkwo is already going to have people waiting for him to fail and he is going to have to work twice as hard to prove them all. All because of who his father is.
ReplyDelete2)Okonkwo in my opinion values all the things his father didn't. He wants people to trust that he will pay them back and that he is a successful man not like his father who had debts with everyone.
3)From what I have read from the novel so far I think Okonkwo is going to become too focused on what other people think of him and go to great lengths so that people don't associate him with his father anymore.
I agree with Lydia because when you try to avoid being like someone, that is when you start to actually start being like them because you aren't realizing that all you've done is run away from the person you were meant to be.
ReplyDelete1.Unokoka life affected Okonkwo life as a child because he strived to be nothing. He also was always in debt and had nothing good to fall back on. He never had a degree and never had any money to take care of hi family. Okonkwo was always looked down upon until he was able to defeat the “cat” .Which was when he was older so he was also affected by that. He also wanted to grow up and be known for something. H e knew that he didn’t want to be like his father.
ReplyDelete2.Okonkwo values his name. He wants to be known for something. Okonkwo does not want to be known in a bad way like his father.
3.From what I have read I think things Okonkwo’s father did will come and mess up his life. Okonkwo is so obsessed with not being like his father .I think somehow something will happen that he becomes like him.
I agree with Josephine and Lydia. When a person i obessed with not being like a person they later become that person. They act like them without even realzing.
ReplyDelete1. Unoka's life affects Okonkwo as a child because of Unoka's actions and not taking reponsibility Okonkwo was left alone to care and provide for his family. He was also left alone to mature faster and never really have a childhood.
ReplyDelete2. Okonkwo values his name and working hard. Also, with working hard, that nothing in life is going to be handed to you, but actually will have to be worked for.
3. I believe that based on the novel, Okonkwo will turn out to be just like his father, even though he's trying to get away from who he truely is. Also, that his anger will lead him to become something he doesnt want to be.
1. In the beginning of the novel we see that Unoka's life style affected Okonkwo's as a child when he speaks about how the time that his playmate made fun of his dad by calling him a agbala- which is a word for women also for one who has yet to be giving a title. This is something that he never forgot; All the embarrassment and shame. At a young age Okonkwo disliked the kind of person his father was. As a man, Okonkwo grew to hate everything that his father embodied. His father was in debt, weak, lazy, he never worked hard, never got a title, and left him with no farm to inherit. All of his hatred towards the type of person his dad was made him the hard working, strong-willed, and brave man he is now.
ReplyDelete2. Okonkwo's character values the reward of working as hard as one can be pushed and even more. He also values the title that comes with the hard work, which for him is the fame he has gained from taking out the undefeated Amalinze the cat. As a result he values everything his father never was.
3. Based on what I have read so far, as the story continues we will probably see Okonkwo's deep fear of resembling his father may come true; because of the fact that he is forcing himself to be the opposite. Him trying so hard to be stern and powerful, will eventually eat at him. Deep down he seems to be vulnerable, and he is just hiding who he truly is with a mask of strength. He is hiding himself to save himself from the judgement and embarrassment again.
Unoka's life affected Okonkwo as a child as well as a man. Because Unoka owed people a lot of money, many thought that Okonkwo would act the same way. Okonkwo despises the type of life that his father had to live. His father was very poor and depressing, so he wants to be the exact opposite of his father.
ReplyDeleteOkonkwo values working hard. Every fortune that he has, he brought that upon himself. He didn't count on his father or anybody. He is a very strong, independent character.
As the novel progresses, Okonkwo might realize more about his father's decisions. He might become a more passionate person than a person who only works, works, works.
I agree with Eileen about the whole hardworking part. Okonkwo comes off as a hardworker, and I think that is what influences him to be a leader in the village.
ReplyDelete1. Unoka's life affects Okonkwo life not only as a child but a man also because Unoka was a lazy man and that affects Okonkwo because he grew up with the image that his father was a lazy man and had debt to alot of people.
ReplyDelete2.Okonkwo values his name and working hard because he wants to be remembered for something good.
3.i think at the end Okonkwo will end up being just like his father because he is trying so hard to not be like it that i feel the twist will be that.
1 . Unokas life has left his child with nothing and the work tht his father did not do he will have to pay for it. Also work twice as hard.
ReplyDelete2. He values working hard because he wants to be remembered for somthing good not the way his father was remembered.
3. I feel that okokwo will be able to change the fate that he has around dispite all the bad weather for his crops. He will change it around.
1) Unoka's life affect Okonkwo as a child as well as a man because okonkwo wanted did not want to be like his father, a man that was always in debt. Okonko wanted to be better and known for something good.
ReplyDelete2)Okonkwo's character values the reward of working as hard as one can. He also values the everything that goes with it, which for him is the fame he has gained from taking out the undefeated Amalinze the cat.
3)From what i read, Okonkwo will not end like his father. He will keep on working hard and do everything his father didn't do which is being succesful.
The way Okonkwo grew up definitely impacted the way that he grew up into a man - as it usually affects mot people. He grew up with certain values, and views towards life which ultimately made him not want to be like his own father when her grew up. I agree with Eileen were she says "He also values the title that comes with the hard work. He valued what what work brought to him in his life, as well as the rewards that came from working hard. He will most likely not turn out to be like his father, but as is true in every society, you always walk away with a little bit of your parents still in you no matter what you say or do that was the way you were raised.
ReplyDelete1) Unoka, as a father, loved Okonkwo, and that's why he gave him everything he did. Unoka's growing debt bothered Okonkwo, along with the fact that Unoka didn't have a higher education, money, or anything to fall back on. So as a man, Okonkwo strived to be everything his father was not. He wanted to be successful and not have to worry about anything. Okonkwo didn't wanna stick to his father's bad reputation.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values status and reputation. He does what he think he needs to do in order to be respected as a man. He doesn't want to be look badly upon from others or share any resemblance with his father, who he thinks is a slacker.
3) Based on what I've read, I think that Okonkwo will realize the reasons behind his father's actions and will finally not be so judgmental/harsh on the poor guy. OR he might just end up with the same lifestyle that his father lived by.
(About Angie's #3 Comment...)
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about how Okonkwo's dissaproval for his father could just end up horribly for himself! I was thinking more along the lines of a happy ending, bit your answer is probably more likely to happen since it's more realistic. Okonkwo might not learn much as the novel progresses and the anger could just build up inside of him, which would affect all of his other relationships as a result... Good thinking!
PS... I miss English class :-(
1)Okonkwo was affected as a child because he did not like his father. All he knew was that he was lazy. He did not work and was always borrowing money. He did not want to be like him so he works hard and hates laziness.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values hard work and dedication.
3)Okonkwo will become isolated and hated among his people. No one will be speak to him out of fear and hate
1) Unoka's life affects Okonkwo as a child because when his father died he would die with know title leaving him with nothing to invest or grow on.
ReplyDelete2) Okonkwo values hardwork and sweat for wanting to be more then what his father was.
3)Based on what i've read so far i think Okonkwo will stay the way he is; a prideful, strong, close minded man. In the end that will hurt him more then anyone else in the novel.
