Discuss the roles of and treatment of women in Umuofia. What is the significance of Chielo, the priestess of Agbala, and the episode in which she takes Ezinma on a nightly voyage?
The women in Umuofia has many roles and get treated differently. Their roles are to cook for the men and clean around the house. Their also the ones who take care of the children. They get treated badly. In this society, women are lower than men and the males could abuse them whenever they want. The males choose which women they want to marry and the females have no say in the marriage. The significance of Chielo taking Ezinma on a nightly voyage shows that she wants to get treated equality and she wants to show that shes tired of being lower than men and has to fear of changing that.
The women of Umuofia were considered lower than man to the point that they were nude. They used to paint their bodies to cover their private parts. Men were allowed to beat women severely. The women were usually safe from beating during the Week Of Peace. Men chose and bought their wives and were allowed to have more than one. Women were in charge of the house hold and the children although the children were not considered theirs. Chielo, the priestess of Agbala is significant because Chielo is like a goddess and she takes Ezinma on the voyage to show her that women can be treated equally they're just afraid to try and change it.
The role of women in the village is that they are house wives. They take care of the home, cook, clean, take care of the husband and children.Women are property to men and they are also sold and as well with their children.Woman are usually sold when they are to be wed. Then they are sold for a bride price. The significance is that Chielo take Esnima on the voyage and shows that woman can be important.
The women of Umuofia are not considered as equal to men, in fact they are considered as property of the man they are married to. The men are allowed to have as many wives as he desires as long as he can afford the bride price, but women can only have one husband. The men are allowed to beat their wives as long as it as not on the week of peace. The children are considered to be the men’s children since without the men; the children cannot be taken care of properly. Being called a woman was an insult to these men. The Umuofian woman’s only job was to cook, and take care of the children. The significance of when Chielo takes Ezinma is tat it shows that it shows that Okonkwo cares about Ezinma and Ekwefi since he went after Ekwefi and he made four trips to go find them.
At first, it seems like the women are powerless and this is true in some ways because women are property to men and they are also sold and as well with their children.I think the fact that Chielo, a woman, is the priestess and has the full power of her god and the fact that she is greatly feared. So, in that respect, a woman has power in some parts, at least in religion. Also, the women perform extremely important duties, like weeding the farm for the yams. This is very important for the crops. They also educate the children, through their story telling.I'm not sure why Chielo, the priestess takes Ezinma on the nightly voyage. I know that Ezinma has just been very, very sick. Perhaps she is giving her some spiritual protection.
The roles of and treatment of women in Umuofia was lower than the standards of men and it was worse. They did not have the same rights and were allowed to be beaten by men. The significance of Chielo taking Ezinma on a nightly voyage shows that she wants to get treated equality and she wants to show that shes tired of being lower than the men.
I think what makes Chielo different from the other women of Umofia is that she is an interpritor for tne oracle so she has more of a high respect than other women who are bought and consider property. I also agree with what both Anndy and Emely said becahse eventhough people im Umofia follow the strict laws, some if not all question it specially the women who have no rights.
In the Umuofia society women are not seen as equal to men. Their jobs are to clean, cook, and take care of the children as well as their husbands.Men are strong and the supporter of the family. They can physiclly abuse their wife or wives.Women are basiclly seen as property and nothing more. When chielo takes Ezinma it showed me a side of Okonkwo that hasn't been seen since I started reading the story. It showed me that he really cared about he's daughter and that he feared what would happen next.I agree with what Melissa had to say because I do believe it shows that he does have a caring side.
The role of women in Umuofia was that they held a lower place in society as to men. They were considered as property of men and got beatn by them. The significance of the Chielo is that it shows Enzinma that women can have equl rights as men.
And also i agree to what Gabby says about Chielo because of the way she is protrayed as in the story.
The women from Umuofia have basically no say for themselves. They are not allowed to stand up for themseleves or fight back. Reffering back to what Ely said, the tasks that women had in that society was to cook, clean, take care of the kids, cater to their husbands, and accept any beatings that were offered to them. Women were only seen as property and didnt have much value after that. By Chielo taking Ezinma, what this says about her charachter is that she cares. Like Gabriel said, she is probably looked at as an important person because she is the women who gives the oracles. She is viwed way more higher than what women are viwed as in the society.
The woman's roles are traditional. They have to cook, clean, they are are considered less than men. Women have no say and they are used and abused. The significance of Chielo taking Ezinma on a nightly voyage proves how she wanted to feel equal and express how she is sick of being mistreated. In regards to Stephanie's comment; Ezinma is considered the highest class of all the women.
