So lets see if I understood the intro correctly. The play we are going to read is about a guy name Oedipus that accidentally kills he father but doesn't know its his father. Then he marries his mother even though thats what his parents were trying to avoid. It sounds like a novela!
Lols Ashley, Yeah It Is Like a novela. But Oedipus was send away when he was a baby,so he did not really know who his family was. So i guess i can understand why he would marry his mother, since he doesnt know who she is. & Did his father know who Oedipus was? well thats all i could think of right now.
Sophocles writes about trageties but he lived a very happy life. He became recogniced at the age of 28 and won 24 first place prizes for his works. he has written 123 plays.
The Oedipus Rex is a tragety.Oedipus is the king of Thebes, and is married to Queen Jocasta who he has won when her husband king Laius was killed in the roads by a traveler. He won her by solving a riddle posed by the Sphinx. A not so lovely monster with a female head, lion body and eagle wings. BUT what he did not know is that Queen Jocasta and King Laius are his PARENTS! on top of that( as the wiped Cream) Oedipus killed his father King Laius by accident in the road. This is TWISTED. I like it!
The intro Talks about this man named Sophocles .He is a writer and the genre he writes are about tragedies. An example of his works is the Story Oedipus Rex.It is one of the greatest tragedies. The story i about king Oedipus and he is married to Queen Jocasta. The story says he has an "ill fated past"What does "ill fated past" mean?Does it mean like a background? Then it talks about how he killed his father but he didnt know it was his father. But then he marries his mother but he didnt know it was his mother. But Oedipus was sent away because of a prophecy. He was supposed to be killed but the sheperd in charge of disposing his body felt bad and gave a messenger the child.Which somehow came to a queen that took oedipus.Oedipus means swollen foot.
From what I read I know that Oedipus Rex one part of 3 tragedies that Sophocles wrote. During the fifth century drama in Greece was very big. The summary of Oedipus Rex said that this character Oedipus Rex was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. His parents trying to avoid this tragedy planned to kill the baby but instead he ended up getting adopted by a Corinthian couple. He ends up killing his father accidentally on the road and does marry his mother. This story so far sounds very interesting to me and I already feel really bad for Oedipus because he has no control over this because its his destiny.
After reading the intro, I think that this reading is going to be interesting. The intro describes how when Oedipus Rex was born, his parents gave him away to a shepherd so that he could be killed because they knew that he was going to be trouble. But the shepherd didn't have the heart to get rid of the baby. Once Oedipus grows up, he ends up killing his father Laius and marrying his own mother, Jocasta. The crazy part was that he nor his mother had any clue that they were mother and son! Like the other girls said, the story of Oedipus Rex sounds like a novela/soap opera.
In the introduction talks about Sophocles and his backward. It also explains the background of the Oedipus Rex. Oedipus Rex Is about a guy who kills his father but doesn’t know it was his father and then he marries his mother.
The introduction of Oedipus Rex was very interesting as I was reading. I can tell that this reading will have many of different characters and drama occurring. The reading explains a story of Oedipus Rex of how he was born and once he grew up ended up killing his father, without actually knowing it was his father. Then he marries his mother who as well she had no idea that that was her son. It sounds like many situations between character and emotions will spark up, and I agree with almost everyone sounds like a Novela! I am excited to keep reading.
After reading the introduction of Oedipus Rex what I understood is that his parents wanted to kill him when he was born. They gave the baby to a farmer so he would kill it but was afraid to do so. Oedipus Rex grows up and without knowing kills his own father, then he gets married to his mom without each knowing their actual relation. Sounds like a chick flick to me...
The Greek men used to act out tragedies which were serious drama featuring main characters who strive to achieve something and is ultimately defeated. They would normally act out real problems which they had. The carved the theater in which they performed and all went to watch the performances. Since men were the only ones whom acted, they could act out multiple people because they wore masks to differentiate in characters. Oedipus Rex is one of three plays the Sophocles wrote. In the play Oedipus was given away because his parents didn’t want the fortune of Oedipus to kill his father and marry his mother to come true. This was unenviable and The prophecy was fulfilled.
After reading the Intro, I learned that Oedipus Rex was written by Sophocles. Oedipus Rex is about a couple who was told that they would have a child who in the future will kill his father and marry his mother. To prevent this from happening a man who was also involved was a shepard. He carried the baby to the mountain top but felt guilty and decided to give the baby to a differant set of parents. When the baby grew up, he began living life, not doing what the biological parents were told he would do. But then, he killed his father and not knowing, took the hand of his mother.
From just reading the intro to Oedipus Rex it seems very interesting. Oedipus wins Queen Jocasta after her husband dies. Oepidus, whose name mean swollen foot, was abandoned by his parent when he was a baby so he would not kill his father when he is older. Even though they gave him to a shepard, he ends up with the royal family of Corinth. He later learns that his new wife and her late husband are his parents! (That really creeped me out) Even worse, he was the one who killed Jocasta's husband. His father! It is like his fate could not be changed, it was already determined from the day of his birth.
In the tragedy we are going to keep reading is unfortunatley about Oepidus and how he was left from his parents supposably so he wont kill his father. But after he gets married to the women that gave him life which is nothing creepy (very funny) and he kills his father. my reaction to the story is not moved at all.
Really, Sophocles? This is such a novela! So the introduction goes as follows... Oedipus (also known as "Swollen Foot") was born with this bad\ill fate that he was going to end up killing his father and marrying his mother. So to prevent this, his royal parents send him away to the mountains with the shepard. To prevent Oedipus from marrying his mother, wouldn't you think they'd keep him around? Anyways, the shepard changes his mind and gives Oedipus to Corinthian couple. So later on in life, Oedipus accidentally kills his father and marries his mother. If I were him, I'd kill the mother, too! She threw him out for nothing, because he still killed the father and married her. That's some bad luck.
From the reading I understood that Oedipus Rex was given up by his parents to be killed because they wanted to avoid him killing hi father and marrying his mother. But eventually he does kill his father in a car accident and he marries his mother in the end. No matter what they did it all came true. This is why I think that people shouldn't mess with destiny. Overall this is a very interesting story and I can't wait to read more.
This story is crazy. It's all over the place. Queen Jocasta and King Laius have a baby son. There's some sort of prohecy thats say that this child will kill King Laius and marry his own mother. The Queen and King gave the baby away , the plan was to kill it. That obviously never happened because Oedipus ends up killing his own father without even knowing it.
As an infant, Oedipus was given away by his parents, Jocasta and Laius, to be left for dead because of a prophecy. The prophecy said that their son would kill his father which turns out to be true. Oedipus kills his father, not knowing who he was. He then tricks a sphinx into giving Queen Jocasta to him. He marries her, not knowing she is his mother. This is so wrong...
What I understood from reading the story what I got from it is that it was a sort of novela. But what happens is a baby Oedipus is born with a fate that he was going to kill his father. Then the parents sent him away to a mountain but then the shepherd sends them back. He then kills his father and married his own mother and didn’t know.
The introduction to this Oedipus Rex was twisted. Oedipus marries his mother, and doesn't know she is his mother after he killed his own father. He was sent as a baby and never knew his parents.
The Drama Oedipus Rex is about the King of Thebes, who is Oedipus. When he was born his parents Jocasta and Laius decide to kill him knowing that one day he will kill his father and marry his mother. So they gave him to shepherd to leave him on the sid of Mount Cithaeron, but he felt bad for the baby and gave him to a Corinthian messenger. The Corinthian royal named him Oedipus mean ing "swollen foot," and raised him. The prophecy was later full-filled.
