I can tell this epic will be very challenging to read. The introduction is very comfusing, but I like the way it explained the scenery and time in Greece with different sections. This introduction gives a really good explaination of Oedipus Rex's background. I can't wait to begin Oedipus Rex because I know it's going to be much more challenging than the Iliad.
I already knew the story of Oedipus Rex but I am looking forward to read this play in more detail. I like that the introduction talks about Sophocles and his backward. It also explains the time period in which Sophocles wrote Oedipus Rex. I am also looking forward to the dramatic irony this play has and the twists it brings. I can already tell that this play will have a few characters unlike the Illiad and the characters themselves will have secrets that will be revealed later on in the play.
Oedipus Rex Is about a guy who kills his father but doesnt know its his father and maries his mother which his parents where trying to avoid. I Also Like how They Give His Background.
Sophocles was a play writer who portrayed his plays to be miserable and gloomy. He however had a good, comfortable life. At age 27 he recieved recognition after he beat play writer Aeschylus in a competition. He wrote 123 plays. Only 7 have survived.
Oedipus Rex
This play was written by Sophocles and like all plays, the cast consisted of all men whom took the roles of both men and women. These men would act plays out using big masks. Oedipus Rex is a play about a couple who was told that they would concieve a child who would in the future kill his father and marry his mother. In order to keep this from happening, the coupld rearanged for their baby to be taken to a mountain top, feet bound at the ankles, to die. The man who aggread to do so was a shepard. He carried the baby to the mountain top but felt guilt and decided to give the baby to a differant set of parents. When the baby grew up-he carried out what the biological parents were told he would do; he killed his father and unknowingly took the hand of his mother.
(Summary above just incase anyone had difficulty understanding)
I have already heard the play before but i havent read it in detail, or at all for that matter. As i read about the play i found it interesting and i think it is going to be an interesting peice to read in class. Reading about how the plays were performed surprised me; the cast of all the plays back then consisted of all men. I wonder if they performed Romeo and Juliet with just all guys?
In the Oedipus Rex intro it fist starts off explaining diffrent types of writing stiles during the Greeks time. Also it explained how actors would interact on stage and could play multiple characters at a time by switching masks on stage. This story was written by Oedipus about how a set of parent concieve a child and later on are told that the child would grow up to kill his father and then take his mothers hand in marriage. The parents then take the child to a mountain to be killed and a shepard agrees to killed the child. The shepard felt guilt and gave the child to a set of diffrent parents. The child destiny is still complete which is that he kills his father and marrys his mother. I really like the intro of this story it was easy to interpret and very intresting. I also like that there werent as much characters as there was in the Illiad. The writing style of the story is also diffrent from the Illiad. Since the Illiad had heroes and Gods and Godesses th Oedipus Rex story hasnt shown any characters like that. Over all the intro was intersting and captivating.
The introduction talked about Sophocles. He wrote tragedies. It also explained how actors were at this time. Male actors played both male and female roles. The story was about king Oedipus and his wife Queen Jocasta. They were told that they were going to have a baby and that one day, that baby would kill his own father and marry his mother. To prevent that from coming true, they but the baby on a mountain. The man who put the baby there felt bad and gave him to another family. He grew up and unknowingly killed his father and married his mother.
What I read in the introduction is that there telling us who Sophocles is. He was a young man around 27 I think. He wrote plays and mostly tragedies. It explained how men would play both female and male at this time. I've read / heard about this a long time ago, but never got into depth. I know its about a couple and their son which then kills his father and mary's his mom. Thats all I remember though ..
My understanding of the introduction was that it speaks about Sophocles background. Also it explain how the Athens were into plays. It also explains how a play was back in the day. For example, characters could act more than one character because they worse masks and were able to play different roles. The introduction also explains how the story started came to be in which started off as a mystery in the family that's haunting them now.
The Oedipus Rex Intro is about telling us the biography of Sophocles. Oedipus Rex is written by Sophocles. Its a play about Creon who kills his father, Laius and then married his own mother, Jocasta. That left Jocasta to commit suicide. I remember reading a story similar to this or it was this in religion class last year.
So the intro is that Creon kills his father and marries his mother. That some sick thing to do eventhough he didnt know they were his parents. Also the story was made by sophocles who is held high in Greek culture.
The introduction of Oedipus Rex what I understood first is that his parents gave him away to be killed but the person did not had the heart to kill Oedipus. When he grew up he ends up killing his own father king Lauis but he did not know that Lauis was his father. Then he marries his own mother Queen Jocasta and both did no know that were mother and son.
This story was kinda of confusing to me and epic. First I understoos the types of writing that they had for the greek. Then I understood Achilles kills his father without knowing its his father and after that he sleeps with his mother. TThis story is dramatic. Its liek a novela and I like it when I understand some of the parts.
Oedipus Rex is considered to be on of the world's greatest tragedies. It was composed by Sophocles. The story is about Oedipus who is the "ill-fated" king of Thebes where his past catches up with him and wreaks havoc on him and his family. He wins the hand of Queen Jocasta by solving a riddle given by the Sphinx who had been terrorizing Thebes. The twist is that Jocasta- the woman he marries and whos husband (King Laius)- ends up being his mother and King Laius his father. Hoping to avoid the terrible prophecy, his parents made arrangements to kill their son. He was given to a shephard who was ordered to abandon him but instead he was given to the Corinthian messenger, who then gave him to the king and queen of Corinth. Later on Oedipus discovers that he has married his mother and unknowingly met King Laius on the raod and killed him.
The into talks about Sophocles and his background. He wrote plays and dramatic plays and what not. But the actual story is about king Oedipus and his wife Queen Jocasta. They have a baby and were told the baby would kill the father and marry the mother.
The introduction was talking about who Sophocles is and what his plays were about which were mostly tragedies, It also stated that men would play both the roles of male and female by switching masks. The play Oedipus Rex is about a Guy who kills his father without knowing and marries his mother.
The story begins with a guy who kills his father because the parents are told that he will grow up to kill his father and then marry his own mother. They were gonna kill theyre son but they gave it to a shepard to kill him. Because the shepard couldnt kill him he gave the boy to some parents and the boy still has the oath to kill his father and marry his mother.
from what i understood from the reading is that Oedipus Rex kills his father while taveling or somthing but doent know its his father and i think he get his mother as a prize but doesnt know its his mother
What i understand is that Oedipus was given away to a shepherd who gave him away to a Corinthian messenger and he grew up as Corinthian royal. He was given away because a prophecy was trying to be avoided. but what i don't get is that in the end does Oedipus kill Laius unknowingly.
I found the introduction to be very interesting and I have a feeling I'm going to like reading this piece. I think it's amazing how the guilt of just one character changed the story completely. This story is very ironic because although they tried to kill the baby by bringing it to a mountain top to avoid him killing his father and marrying his mother the child's destiny was still fulfilled.
In the beginning its talking about how oedipus Rex is one of the world's best tragedies and explains to us what exactly tragedy is and tragic flaw . The greek theater is also described in the intro . Here they tell us how the theater of Dionysus was created and give us some information on the actors that performed.Oedipus Rex is one of the three plays sophocles composed. It took him 36 years to complete them. The story of Oedipus has irony written all over it . Oedipus wins the honor of marrying Jocasta "mother" by solving a riddle. Jocasta's Husband King Laius was killed by a traveler while he was on the road. Later Oedipus soons discovers the truth about his parents which are Queen Jocasta and king Laius.he also finds out that hes parents gave him away because they didnt want the prophecy that their son would kill his father and end up marrying his mother ... now isnt that ironic.
