Period 3 Commentary on The Illiad

Explain Agamemnon's relationship with Achilles.  What do we learn abut his character through his dialogue?

  1. Agamemnon's relationship with Achilles is very close because Achilles let Agamemnon run his army the way he wanted to in despite of Agamemnon reasons (which were to destroy Troy). Through Agamemnons dialogue we learn that he is selfish and he doesn's care about anyone but himself because he was only willing to give up Chyrseis if they gave him a prize of honor worthy of him.

  2. From the reading, well what I understood, I think that the relationship between Agamemnon and Achilles is a tense one. I think that because Achilles is the strongest Greek warrior that it creates tension with Agamemnon who is the commander of the Greek forces. This means that Agamemnon is in a higher position of authority than Achilles and when Achilles tells him, "Just let the girl go..." Agamemnon takes this in the wrong way as if Achilles was ordering him. This I believe, begins an argument between them.

What I learned about Agamemnon through his dialogue is that he likes to be the one in charge with power. He also likes having the prize of war.

*By the way if someone can give me a better understanding of the reading, that would be nice.

  3. Agamemnon and Achilles have a powerful relationship. I agree with Ashley that since Achilles is the strongest Greek warrior but Agamemnon has higher position in authority does bring tension. It's like they have something to prove and show their superiority from one another. There relationship is very interesting.

In the dialogue you view how Agamemnon likes to be in control and will not let himself be any less. He is selfish as Josephine said and wants everything his was. He looks for the benefit of everything for motivation, like the prize of war.

  4. Agamemnon's relationship with Achilles is very close because Achilles let Agamemnon run his army the way he wanted to. I agree with Nelly and Ashley when they said this relationship creates tension because Achilles is the strongest Greek warrior and Agamemnon who is the commander of the Greek forces is jealous of him in a way.

  6. Agamemnons and Achillies relationship is a good one.Its a good relationship because whenever Achillies talks about agamemnon he says it with kindness. He doesnt speak harshly about him. Also agamemnon is letting Achillies run his army.I dont think if you didnt have a good relationship with somone that you would let them run your army.

  7. What about his threats to Achilles?

  8. Agamemnon's relationship with Achilles is based on hatred and jealousy. Hatred because Agamemnon is rude and selfish. When Chryses went to get his daughter back, Agamemnon violently ordered him away without a second thought to what he asked for. Achilles is more softer and neutral, and he tells Agamemnon to give Chryseis back to her father. Tension bulids when Agamemnon threatens to take one of Achilles' girls. Agamemnon thinks that it is not fair that Achilles gets to keep his, but he cannot. Also from what I read, Agamemnon seems jealous of Achilles because of so much power Achilles has and he is the strongest Greek god. Agamemnon wants that power. We learn that Agamemnon is an ungrateful and selfish man that will do anything to be ahead of Achilles.

  10. From what I have read, I would say that Agamemnon and Achilles have an interesting relationship. Agreeing with Lydia they hate and are jealous of one another. The tension between them are very strong.

What I got from the dialogue is the fact that Agamemnon likes to be in control. Also if he does not get his way, he is very selfish, and always what it his way.His eyes is on the prize on every situation. If he does not win, then he would not be satisfied.

And his threats to Achilles shows that he really need to have control. "I swear she will grown old at home in Argos..." its show that if it is not his way then it is no one else's way.

  11. We learn that Agamemnon and Achilles have a very close relationship. Achilles early on in the Illiad confronts Agamemnon who is the commanding officer and demands that he return the girl he has taken away from the priest Chryses. He basically yells at Agamemnon and tells him that he is selfish and greedy. Achilles was ready to fight to the death against Agamemnon because he feels that he does all the back breaking work fighting will Agamemnon gets richer.

Through out the Illiad Agamemnon shows himself to be very dishonorable. He would rather watch thousands of his warriors being killed than to give up this girl(which he considers her to be his price).

  12. Agamemnon and Achilles' relationship is based on authority. Since they both have a lot of power, they both are fighting to outshine each other. I found it very hard to understand the reading because of all the names, but I can infer that Agamemnon is very harsh and expresses himself bery bluntly. For example, when he refers to Achilles as a "visionary of hell," I found that very interesting and it emphasizes the tension and hate between the two of them.

  13. Agamemnon's relationship with Achilles is a weird type of love now we may call it tough love. It's built on jealousy and hatred as Lydia mentioned above. But this is the way they connect, just being who they are is what brings them together.

What we learn about his character through his dialogue is that he maybe sort of selfish. Because he tries to get his way and does what ever he can to do so. He likes to be in power and have control of others, also he would not give up Achilles for anything as Angine mentioned.

  14. Aamemnon's realtionship with achilles is an ancient way of loving like my grandma calls it. She told me that theres no love if jelousy and alittle dislike is not there.

what we also learn about his charater is that he is snobby, selfish, arrogant.he forces his way for everything because he can do it. he wont give up Achilles.

Cant wait to see "Troy" in class

  15. In the reading I understood that Achilles let Agamemnon in charge of the army which to me looks like trust. Trust that Achilles has in Agamemnon. Agamemnon sees how much of a responsibility he gave him and feels like Achilles, although powerful, has his weak side and wants to overpower him by taking advantage of the authority he has given him so far. Agamemnon, like my fellow classmate Lydia has mentioned, is selfish. Through this dialog, we can see how selfish and jealous Agamemnon is and how badly he wants to overrule Achilles.

  16. Achilles and Agamemnon are two very powerfull characters in the story. I understood that they both try to obtained that "spot light" to be the most powerfull they are totally rivals they both want victory. They are on the greek side, Achilles mightiest warrior and Agamemnon king of Mycenae and commander of the Greek forces.

Judging by Agamemnon's dialogue he's controling and likes to win he has a huge pride i think and he could be cocky or conceided by the way he speaks to Achilles

  17. From the reading, I came to the conclusion that the relationship between Agamemnon and Achilles is on edge after Calchas Thestoride tells Achilles why Apollo is so ruthless towards the army. When Achilles tells him to return the girl so that Apollo can stop, Agamemnon asks for a reward. I think this shows that Agamemnon was looking for some type of reward whether he gave her up or not.

I think it also gets tenser when Achilles tells Agamemnon that the only reason he's helping him fight Troy is as a favor.

  18. From what I understood from the reading, i believe that Achilles and Agamemnom don't have a good relationship at all. As said by Lydia, Agamemnom seems like he is trying to do better than Achilles because he is jealous of him. Also their characters opposite each other. Achilles is more peaceful and Agamemnom seems to want war.

  19. Through his dialogue I can infer that Agamemnon doesn't like Achilles at all and he wants to destroy him.

  20. I was a little confused throughout the reading, but what I understood from the dialogue was that the relationship between Agamemnon and Achilles was one of competition. I saw this mostly from Agamemnon. It seemed to me that he was always trying to one up Achilles. He thought that he deserved more than Achilles had. Agamemnon came off as a greedy man and as if he was just using Achilles' strength as a great warrior to earn himself credit as a king and treasures and spoils that he had not won on his own.

  21. I'm not exactly sure on how to explain the relationship between Agamemnon and Achilles. Agamemnon definitely comes off stronger than Achilles does... There is some tension between the two due to the fact that he can have something against Achilles since he's the strongest warrior. So maybe he's jealous and just wants to make sure that Achilles knows that he's in charge. But then again that can just be his personality. After all, how nice can you expect a commander of Greek forces to be? He might not hold anything personally against Achilles at all. But in the end, there's definitely an issue of power, pride, and boundaries between the two.

  22. As portrayed in the beginning of the story, Agamemnon and Achilles relationship-from my understanding- is competitive, more for Agamemnon. Essentially he just want to battle it out with Achilles to prove his strength. Refusing to give up Chryseis without a better prize than any of which Achilles had received- is selfish and shows his jealousy towards Achilles' success. All in all there is rivalry between them.

  23. Reading between the lines, we learn that the character -Agamemnon- is a bit too over confident, jealous, and definitely selfish.

  24. Achilles hated Agamemnon, but needed him in order to fight. Achilles wanted to be known for winning. Agamemnon hated Achilles as well, but needed him to win the wars. This would give Agamemnon more power. Achilles tells Agamemnon that he is very greedy, and we are all taking part of this war for you. Agamemnon doesn't care about what anyone says. He just wants a prize in return because he needs to give be what he captured.(Chryseis. Through Agamemnon's dialogue we learn that is very demanding and controlling. He wants it only his way. Achilles is more open and thinks about what is the best for others first.

  25. Agamemnon and Achilles have a very dependent relationship. Achilles wanted his glory for winning the war, and Agamemnon needed Achilles to win the wars for him. Through the dialouge I sense some dislike between the two characters. ALthough Agamemnon hated AChilles, his power depended on Achilles winning his battles for him.

  26. Agamemnon and Achilles had a bad relationship; they are enemies. Agamemnon believes that Achilles wants to replace him and be his equal. There is alot of hate and tension between the men and it can be seen when Achilles was going to kill Agamemnon for saying he was going to take Achilles' "prize". Agamemnon is selfish and demanding while Achilles wants the best for his people.

  27. Agamemnon and Achilles have a competative relationship. They are also dependent on each other. Based on the dialogue I can tell that they dislike each other. There is definatly tension between the two.

  28. agamemnon and achilles have a really bad relationship because they are both really competative and they are enemies but they do really depend on each other for knowladge and skil.Through the dialouge I sense some dislike between the two characters. ALthough Agamemnon hated AChilles, his power depended on Achilles winning his battles for him.

  31. Agemmemon and Achilles relationship was very good and bumpy because Agammemon was in his army. It was bumpy becuase they would argue over thing that didnt have to be argued over but in the most part their relationship was a good one. Achilles is powerful becuase he was running his army through Agammemon.
